Turning Dreams into Careers: Sam’s Story

Turning Dreams into Careers: Sam’s Story

Ever since he was a young boy, Sam has had a dream to work at Walt Disney World. Through the years, that dream evolved and took on more definition as to how that job will look. He envisioned doing everything from working on the rides to being a character actor, to being a guest relations attendant at the gates greeting each guest as they enter the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Sam has worked with Vocational Rehabilitation for years to help build the skills required to prepare for this dream. He has taken part in On-the-job Trainings, Career Camps, and attending college in St. Pete. To build his social skills and learn how to better interact with guests, Sam volunteers at the Children’s Museum and at a local restaurant as a host. Each step of the way, Sam has remained motivated to do what he needs in order to achieve his career goals.

When Sam returned home after college, he began his journey toward finding a job that would allow him to continue to build toward that dream. With the help of his employU Employment Specialist, Jeff, Sam began his job at Clover Field, Spring Training home of the New York Mets. Sam is part of their security team and is the first point of contact for guests coming to enjoy the game. Sam is tasked with checking bags at the gate for prohibited items. Sam must greet each guest as they enter, check their bags thoroughly for those items, and help answer questions about the park. Jeff provided job coaching for Sam, helping him learn all his job duties and acclimate to the new position and environment. After just one day of working at Clover Field, Sam told his mom that he loves his new job. We can’t wait to see all the ways Sam grows in his new position and are excited for him to one day reach his goal of working at Walt Disney World.
