Sue Spencer

Position: Lead Youth Employment Specialist

Hello, I am Sue Spencer. I have lived in Jacksonville for almost 6 years with my husband and our rescue pets. I love it here and am so happy to settle and call it home.

While in college I worked as a behavioral specialist in a group home for adults with autism. Job coaching was the favorite part of my day. I enjoyed seeing people experience getting a job, learning how to carve out a place for themselves in the workplace, and be successful.

As a residential treatment facility manager for at-risk youth, I realized my love for working with teens and young adults. It is such an important time of self-exploration, discovery of aspirations, and a time to make plans and gain the experience and training to achieve their goals. I loved guiding and assisting them through this process. As a manager, my focus was always on developing my team. I learned early in my work career that taking care of my employees supporting, and grooming them to grow and achieve success was the greatest reward.

In my most recent position, I started as an Employment Specialist creating close relationships to help personalize career paths. Then I moved to transition instructor, where I taught life skills, interpersonal skills, self-advocacy, self-determination, employment readiness, and job search skills. I absolutely loved the experience of preparing people for their employment journey.

It was my very own students who told me I should work at employU because “they work as hard and care as much about us as you do.” After meeting the people at employU during my interview process it didn’t take long to realize they share the same passion and goals that I have, and I am over the moon excited to be a part of this great organization.
