A Boost Towards Success: Stephen’s Story

Sometimes on a career path, one small step can act as a big boost toward reaching a career goal. This was exactly the case with employU client, Stephen. Like many experiences at some point, Stephen was going through a period where he was actively applying to jobs but not having much luck finding work. Determined to not give up, Stephen came to employU for help. Soon after meeting with his Employment Specialist, Steven, he was able to start an On-the-Job Training (OJT) with Grocery Outlet.  OJTs or Paid Work-Based Learning Experiences (WBLEs), are available to both youth and adult clients of employU. During an OJT, a client is able to work four to eight weeks at a business to gain experience and learn new skills. They are also a great option for anyone of any age to explore new industries and career paths. Whether a client is looking to see if a particular field is right for them or gain experience in an industry they are passionate about, OJTs can serve as a “foot in the door” for many.   

Steven felt that the experience would not only help Stephen strengthen his skills, it would also add to his resume and aid in making him more attractive to potential employers. The experience he gained at Grocery Outlet was also a valuable talking point during job interviews. When interviewing with Walmart, Dollar General, and the Family Dollar Distribution Center, he was able to leverage his experience at Grocery Outlet by using it to discuss his skills and strengths. 

After interviewing with several different businesses, Stephen decided to accept a position with Walmart. Here, he works as a store associate. His duties include stocking items and maintaining the shelves in the grocery department, as well as working in the outdoor lawn and garden center. Stephen’s supervisor, Antonio, consistently has positive feedback regarding Stephen when speaking with his Employment Specialist.
