Discovering New Horizons: Noah’s Story
Discovering New Horizons: Noah’s Story
Exploring different career paths after high school is something many young adults do. employU client Noah did just that. After graduating high school, he worked as a teaching assistant in a childcare center. Then, Noah decided he would like to discover other careers and signed up with Vocational Rehabilitation for help. He selected employU as his service provider, and was paired with his Employment Specialist, Tony. The two discussed his career goals, which included challenging himself to learn new skills and break out of his comfort zone. To prepare Noah for any upcoming job interviews, Tony coached him on how to answer interview questions and speak about his character, skills, and experience.
Tony reached out to the Habitat for Humanity Restore about an on-the-job training to learn stocking and retail skills. The Restore Director, Gerald, was impressed with Noah and decided to bring him on board. Noah was paired with the backroom lead, Jill, who taught him sorting, cleaning, pricing, and stocking the items on the floor. Learning all the tasks with ease, Noah acclimated to the job and fit in with the staff easily. While Tony coached Noah on his duties in the beginning, it soon became apparent that he did not need much coaching due to his determination and fast learning.
Because Noah caught on so quickly and showed an excellent work ethic while displaying effective communication and time management, Gerald and Jill created a permanent position for him. Noah accepted a position as a store associate where his job duties include accepting, pricing, cleaning, and stocking donation items. Since then, Noah has proven himself invaluable to their operations and has become one of the most important members of the team.
